LEARN Strategies provides educational services for enrichment and support in Grades Pre-K - Middle School that are based on assessments, developmental benchmarks, and materials that comply with national educational standards.  Assessment results are used to design programs to meet individual student strengths and needs in the areas of reading, writing, math, spelling (using the Orton-Gillingham Approach), grammar, and handwriting.  Learning support sessions for homework and test taking strategies are also available.

  Individualized Tutoring

Tutoring is often the best method to help children in a specific academic area.  Individualized tutoring is used to support a skill that a child has not mastered.  This is also a way to use a child’s strengths to support learning needs.  Our philosophy of positive learning experiences, modeling, and gradual release of support during tutoring sessions is an essential program element. Tutoring your child is a team effort.  Team members include the child, his or her teacher, parents and the tutor. Through brain research and best practices, we know that children learn and reach their highest potential using researched methods and strategies based on their individual skills. Learning in this environment can result in the love of learning along with the acceleration of skills and confidence.

After each tutoring session, your child will receive a progress note explaining the goals and strategies used during the session. Consistent communication is a vital part of the child’s educational program. We also provide program outcomes with a conference for parents after 5 consecutive tutoring sessions.  Return to Top

  Small Group Instruction

LEARN Strategies offers small group instruction consisting of 3-4 students. This unique method of learning, offers a format for children to be active learners becoming engaged with their peers while receiving instructional feedback. Students have opportunities to reflect upon and reply to the diverse responses fellow learners express. Consequently, high levels of understanding and questioning across curriculum areas are applied and extended, within the child’s academic strengths and learning style.

  Literacy Development

Support
Reading strategies are developed with focus on reading for meaning, self- correction, and reflection to foster and enrich literacy development. Through a reading evaluation, programming will be developed entailing skills of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, sight words, vocabulary, comprehension, and the application of reading strategies. These skills will be organized and intentionally taught for children to explore and learn the words of our language. Our goal is to teach our students strategies they need while providing a system for each reader to become a joyful and fluent user of literacy.

Enrichment
Small group enrichment classes focus on higher level thinking skills using questioning, inferring synthesizing, comparison of author style, vocabulary development, and literary language forms.  Children of all ages enjoy reading a variety of generes. These skills will be developed through literature and teacher scaffolding. Our goal is to facilitate higher levels of learning by turning thinking over to the students for the opportunity to enjoy the literary world.  Return to Top

  The Writing Process

Support
The writing process is one of the most complex skills for children.  At LEARN Strategies we value writing, and articulate our philosophy through modeling. We demonstrate our own thinking, revising and editing processes.  We encourage students to examine models of quality writing where authors become mentors. Students write for a purpose, ensuring relevance and meaningfulness. They are taught writing strategies, encouraged to become risk takers and to develop a joy for the writing craft. Students are celebrated as authors.

Enrichment
We take our eager writers to a higher level of writing. We teach writing for a variety of authentic purposes and encourage students to write to specific audiences. Students are given an uninterrupted block of time to write and to develop their craft. We facilitate the writing process; drafting, revising, editing and publishing and they use rubrics to self-evaluate their writing. Most importantly, students appreciate and love the writing process.

  Spelling

Phonics is an essential part of the reading process, and spelling is a key aspect of the writing process.  Through assessment, a developmental word study program using the Orton- Gillingham approach will be designed for effective ways to help children focus on letters, sounds, words, and how our language works.  We explore word learning and word solving skills to develop strategies that are effective and an integral part of reading and writing. Our instruction involves children in active learning, rather than passive drill.  Mastery of spelling is the application of skills in expressive writing. Return to Top

  Handwriting

These sessions are for all students, including home school students and any child who needs assistance with handwriting skills. A student’s fine motor development is assessed using a complete printing assessment from the ‘Handwriting Without Tears Program’ is used to evaluate a student’s strengths and needs in fine motor skills. Handwriting skills affect overall school performance in the application of spelling skills, the writing process, and self esteem. This evidence based program assesses capitals, numbers, and lowercase letter skills. This program is appropriate for students using any curriculum. Return to Top

  Mathematics

Support
Learning the concept of number and operations, developing skills and concepts, and the strategies of problem solving are assessed to develop a program for mathematical understanding.  Through the use of manipulatives, games, modeling and writing, students develop skills to conceptualize mathematics. We promote analytical thinking and provide opportunities to articulate reasoning strategies and problem solving.

Enrichment
Our emphasis in this program is to develop strategies, and strengthen higher order thinking skills. We use current national educational standards and guide students to elevate their thinking while problem solving. This process builds strategies for computation by making connections in their learning. Return to Top
