Barbara Barnett
began her
educational
experience in a one
room school in South
Dakota and went on
to receive her
undergraduate degree
with a double degree
in Special Education
and Elementary
Education from
Augustana College,
Sioux Falls, SD.
After six years in
the classroom, she
embarked on
developing her
professional career
by accepting an
invitation from
Johns Hopkins
University where she
earned her Master in
Special Education.
Barbara continued
her work with
special needs
children during this
time in Bel Air,
Maryland while
implementing
programs and
projects from Johns
Hopkins University.
Upon moving with
family to South
Carolina, Barbara
taught at Heathwood
School in Pre-K.
With the next move
to Tampa Florida,
Barbara taught in
the lower school at
Berkeley Preparatory
School. In 1992 the
family moved to
Japan where her
husband worked in
the international
financial services
business. When the
position was
re-assigned to
Florida, Barbara
taught 1st grade at
Seminole
Presbyterian School
and established a
resource program for
accelerated students
in grades 1- 6.
Finally, the family
moved to Charlotte,
NC where Barbara
taught for 8 years
in Pre-K and 1st
grade at Charlotte
Country Day School.

Team Representative,
Special Areas Team
Leader, and honor of
the Lower School
Faculty Award at
CCDS have been
positions and
opportunities of
reward in her
professional field.
Barbara is a
celebrated educator
of 20 plus years
involving both the
private and public
school sector. Her
entire teaching life
has been dedicated
to the development
of the love of
learning for all
children through the
acquisition of
learning strategies
enabling each child
to be a successful
learner. From her
beginning in the one
room school, to her
revered educational
background and
continued education
of best practices,
her desire to share
her love of learning
with her students,
parents and family
are her daily goals.
Currently, Barbara
and Educational
Consultant Iris
Hines-Flamer, direct
educational services
for students and
families to enrich
and support learning
opportunities
through LEARN
Strategies. She and
her husband enjoy
painting, reading,
and traveling; most
of all, visits from
their two sons
Chris, a graduate of
George Washington
University and Ryan
who is studying at
UNC Asheville.
